In 2005, I launched several experimental protocols at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) within the School of Medicine, University of Minho, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Jorge Correia Pinto, aimed at developing scarless surgery techniques. During this research, I described a new endoscopic approach to accessing the peritoneal cavity via a transvesical port, and the results were published in 2006 in The Journal of Urology (Estevão Lima et al. 2006), the journal with the highest impact factor in urology at the time. This article was pioneering in introducing the transurethral-transvesical route for surgeries and was the first to bring the concept of Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) into urology, and it currently has over 100 citations.
From 2005 to 2008, I continued to develop other innovative projects, introducing the combined natural orifice approach for surgeries like nephrectomy and cholecystectomy (Estevão Lima et al. 2007, Rolanda et al. 2007), also published in The Journal of Urology, each currently with over 100 citations. In 2007, I described the use of the NOTES concept for thoracic cavity access for the first time. Between 2008 and 2009, I published three more articles on this topic, two of which were editor-invited reviews and one original article in European Urology on endoscopic closure of bladder perforations. Alongside laboratory work, I participated in various scientific congresses and events, presenting original work and as an invited speaker.
On September 18, 2008, I completed my Ph.D. in Health Sciences, specifically in Clinical Medicine, at the School of Medicine, University of Minho, with the dissertation titled "Development of Transvesical Port for Scarless Surgery," supervised by Professors Dr. Jorge Correia Pinto and Dr. José La Fuente Carvalho.
Following my Ph.D., I maintained an active research agenda, resulting in over 100 articles in leading international journals in urology, 15 book chapters (many with international publication and editing), and more than 100 abstracts presented at national and international conferences. In the Scopus database, I have 137 referenced publications with 3,211 citations in 2,404 documents and an h-index of 32. I have received 23 awards, many at an international level, am a member of multiple national and international scientific societies, and serve as a reviewer for several international journals. I hold 8 patents, and as the principal investigator, I have secured €396,471 in research funding for the University of Minho, in addition to €15,500 in grants for ICVS. One of my patents was acquired by the German company Karl Storz SE & Co. KG, which facilitated five research grants for Ph.D. studies at the School of Medicine, University of Minho, and the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave.
In the field of postgraduate education research, I mentored a study on the importance of surgical videos in training and education (Mota P, Carvalho N, Carvalho-Dias E, João Costa M, Correia-Pinto J, Lima E. Video-Based Surgical Learning: Improving Trainee Education and Preparation for Surgery. J Surg Educ. 2018;75:828-835 – IF: 2.891). I also developed an educational video library covering the main endoscopic and video-assisted surgeries in urology.
Throughout my career, I have dedicated significant efforts to securing funding and developing research projects in the fields of urology, minimally invasive surgery, and innovation in medical devices. Through partnerships with institutions and grant acquisition, I have been able to support and expand several research lines and contribute to the advanced training of PhD candidates and researchers. Below, I highlight some of the projects, grants, and clinical studies in which I serve as principal investigator.
FCT Grant
With the project "Preclinical Evaluation of the Safety and Advantages of Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES)" (Ref. TDC/SAU-OSM/105578/2008), I secured €76,471 in funding for the period 2010–2013.
This funding was instrumental in establishing a surgical sciences research line, creating a dedicated research laboratory, providing facilities for postgraduate training, and developing hands-on animal-based courses.
“KidneyNav” Project
Sponsored by Karl Storz SE & Co. KG, this €320,000 project (2020–2024) emerged from the sale of a patent (GUIDANCE SYSTEM, METHOD AND DEVICES THEREOF).
The project enabled the creation of six PhD scholarships in "Applied Health Sciences" in collaboration with the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (IPCA).
It also allowed the "Surgical Sciences & Allied Technologies" research line to expand by acquiring new equipment and recruiting researchers for developing endoscopic and robotic devices with artificial intelligence.

Through these projects and grants, I have expanded applied research capacity by developing new technologies and surgical solutions and training skilled researchers in key areas of medicine. The acquisition of funding and partnerships with public and private entities have been crucial in supporting innovation in medical devices and surgical therapies, contributing to advancing scientific knowledge and improving the quality of healthcare.
Currently, I hold a total of eight registered patents, covering advancements in medical devices and techniques for minimally invasive surgical procedures. One of these patents was sold to Karl Storz SE & Co. KG. Below, I highlight each one:

I have participated in and attended dozens of congresses and scientific meetings, both internationally and nationally. During my training in Urology and later as a Hospital Assistant in Urology, I attended specialized courses in ultrasound, interventional radiology, endoscopy, laparoscopy, and image-guided surgery. More recently, I have undertaken specific training to obtain certification in robotic surgery, a crucial requirement for performing this type of procedure. Currently, I hold two certifications in robotic surgery and have completed an advanced course focused on robotic kidney transplantation:
