I began my teaching activity as a Teaching Assistant in Physiology in the area of organ and functional systems for the 1st- and 2nd-year medical curriculum at the School of Medicine of the University of Minho in 2006. From the outset, I taught both theoretical and practical classes and developed various pedagogical support materials for students, particularly in the field of renal and urinary physiology. Currently, within the new “Minho MD” curriculum, I teach Physiology in the course unit Fundamentals of Medicine, and since 2011, I have also taught Human Physiology to Biomedical Engineering students at the University of Minho.
After completing my PhD, I took on the position of Visiting Assistant Professor (30% appointment) at the School of Health Sciences of the University of Minho and later served as Visiting Associate Professor (also a 30% appointment) at the School of Medicine of the University of Minho.
Between the academic years 2011/2012 and 2024/2025, I was responsible for teaching Urology to medical students. I taught Urology in the course unit Clinical Practice and Academic Profile 3, which could be taken either in the 4th or 5th year, depending on the student’s chosen pathway. I regularly updated the syllabus and course content in collaboration with the Heads of the Urology Departments at Hospital do Alto Ave and Hospital de Alto Minho. I consistently received the rating of “Excellent” in the Teaching Performance evaluations of the School of Medicine of the University of Minho.
Between 2012 and 2019, I coordinated the Human Physiology 1 and Human Physiology 2 courses in the 2nd year of the Integrated Master’s in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minho.
Since September 1st, 2025, I have been Full Professor of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, Portugal.
I have supervised 4 PhD theses and am currently supervising 8 doctoral students. I have also supervised 7 integrated master’s theses in the Medicine program at the University of Minho and 1 integrated master’s thesis in Industrial Electronic Engineering and Computers, also at the University of Minho. I have served as an examiner in 3 PhD defenses in Portugal and 2 abroad.
I organized around 23 postgraduate activities at the School of Medicine, University of Minho, 7 postgraduate activities at the “CUF Academy,” and 1 course at “Ahed-Advanced Health Education” at Nova Medical School.
