About Me:

I am Estevão Lima, 57 years old, married and father of three children. I am Full Professor of Surgery/Urology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, in Lisbon, Portugal, and a Consultant Urologist at CUF Hospitals in Portugal.

I completed my medical degree at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto in 1993 and my specialization in Urology at “Hospital Geral de Santo António” in Porto in 2002. That same year, I was awarded the title of Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU), achieving the highest score in Europe. From 2002 to 2010, I served as Assistant in Urology at “Hospital Geral de Santo António” in Porto, where I was responsible for the areas of endourology and laparoscopy. I later led the Department of Urology at Hospital de Braga from 2010 to 2020. From 2016 to 2024, I was the National Coordinator of Urology at CUF Hospitals and Clinics in Portugal.

Internationally recognized as a pioneer in minimally invasive surgical techniques, I have specialized in innovative urological procedures and technologies, including Natural Orifice Surgery, Endoscopy, Laparoscopy, and Robotics. More recently, I introduced advanced techniques in percutaneous kidney access, surgical navigation, and the development of biodegradable ureteral stents. My surgical experience is extensive, particularly in robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic radical cystectomy, endoscopic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, and endoscopic treatment of kidney stones.

I was a Researcher and Professor at ICVS-3Bs of the University of Minho (UM), and since September 2025 I have been Full Professor of Surgery/Urology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, Portugal. I obtained my PhD in 2008 with the thesis titled “Development of Transvesical Port for Scarless Surgery”, and in 2022 I was unanimously awarded the title of Agregado in Medicine by the School of Medicine of UM. I have supervised 4 PhD theses and currently supervise 8 doctoral candidates. Additionally, I have supervised 8 integrated master’s theses.

In the area of academic publications, I have 148 Scopus-indexed publications with 3,673 citations, 16 book chapters (11 of them in international editions), and an h-index of 34. I have received 23 awards, many of them international, and I am a member of several national and international scientific societies, serving as a reviewer for various international journals. I hold 8 patents and, as principal investigator, have secured more than 1 million euros in research funding at UM.
